Backcountry Ski Patroller/ Information and Emergency Services

ORGANIZATION: National Park Service

Time Commitment: Winter months, 32 hrs per pay period

Purpose of Job: Provide a Preventive Search and Rescue Function to Lassen’s winter time backcountry visitors. Serve as eyes and ears to the NPS by advising ranger staff of current snow conditions, avalanche risk, resource threats, and people of concern or violations of law. Serve as well trained and equipped people the park can utilize during winter medical and SAR emergencies.

Duties: Serves as a backcountry/Front country VIP within the boundaries of Lassen Volcanic National Park. The VIP must be able to perform a variety of functions, including:

- Providing visitor information and assistance

- Maintaining informational, regulatory and warning signs

- Marking ski trails

- Safety promotion (PSAR)

- Emergency Medical Services (EMS) program participation

- Search and Rescue (SAR) program participation

- Weather and snowpack evaluation

- Avalanche hazard knowledge and evaluation

- Related equipment maintenance

- Training participation and instruction when appropriate

- Assisting ranger staff with snowmobile projects and patrol if qualified

- Identifying and reporting resource and safety violations as appropriate

Desired Knowledge and Skills: Must have basic knowledge of skiing, winter travel, and winter camping techniques. Should possess working knowledge of the Incident Command System. First Aid/CPR or higher certification preferred. Basic knowledge of technical rescue, ropes, knot tying, litter transport, and patient extrication preferred. Ability to work and drive in a safe manner. Must have current, valid State driver’s license.

At Lassen Volcanic, safety is paramount. Basic safety equipment and clothing are expected to be worn whenever necessary. It is the responsibility of the patroller to wear safety gear when applicable. Basic safety gear includes avalanche beacon, avalanche kit and shovel, gloves, sturdy shoes/boots, long pants, long sleeves and safety glasses. Plenty of drinking water and sunscreen may also be required.
