ORGANIZATION: One Community

Aquapini/Walipini

One Community is a nonprofit all-volunteer sustainability think tank. Our volunteer team fluctuates between 100-200 team members and has included over 1000 volunteers representing more than 60 different countries. We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer to help finish the heating and cooling designs for our aquapini and walipini structures. Here is more about what these structures are and our current plans for them: https://www.onecommunityglobal.org/aquapinis-and-walipinis/#overview

SKILL REQUIREMENTS

  • BSME or equivalent (or near completion)
  • HVAC/Heating and cooling design experience
  • FEA experience
  • Access to AutoCAD and any other design software you'll use (Student License is acceptable)
  • Experience working with food production structures preferred but not required
  • Good mechanical aptitude and excellent problem-solving skills
  • Excellent documentation and communication skills in a remote work setting
  • Experience or ability to learn how to use Google Docs and Dropbox for collaboration
  • Willing to contribute 10 weekly hours for at least 2 months (remote work)

THE TASK

We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer to finalize and improve the heating and cooling designs for our aquapini and walipini structures. Our goal is to create 4 structures that maintain different internal environments in order to grow a diversity of food. One main aspect of these structures will be a climate battery. A climate battery is a new type of heating/cooling system that circulates air through underground tubes where the surrounding earth is used to store and regulate the humidity and temperature of the air. Our goal is to create a platform where others can gain the resources they need to build their own climate battery. In this role, you will be analyzing the current climate battery plan for these structures, and finalizing the designs for open sourcing.

Read more about climate batteries here: https://www.onecommunityglobal.org/climate-battery/
