ABOUT MINDS MATTER NYC
For over 30 years, Minds Matter NYC has connected driven and determined students from low-income families with the people, preparation, and possibilities to succeed in college create their future and change the world. Volunteer with Minds Matter NYC and help low-income students achieve their college dreams.
MENTOR ROLE OVERVIEW
- Mentors guide, challenge and celebrate students through their three years in the program.
- Mentors act as caring adults in their students' lives. They provide consistent support while sharing insight from their journey to college and beyond.
- Minds Matter utilizes a 2:2 model. Mentors work with 2 students alongside another adult mentor to form a quad. Your Co-Mentor is your partner and additional support for your student. When you meet with your quad, you will follow a curriculum developed by our staff. The curriculum provides structure and will help you guide your student at each step of their journey.
WHY VOLUNTEER AS A MENTOR
- Make a difference in the life of a student. Help them unleash their full potential.
- Gain new friends, enrich your community, and join a network of service-minded peers.
- Grow as a leader and sharpen your communication skills.
- Burnish your resume with volunteer service experience.
TIME COMMITMENT
- Volunteers commit to their role for three academic years and follow their mentees through the program (sophomore to senior year in high school).
- Each academic year contains 23 sessions from October to May.
- Sessions are 90 minutes, mid-morning on Saturdays.
- There are no sessions over major holidays or school breaks.
- Volunteers are required to attend 80% of the sessions.
LOCATION
Sessions take place on high school campuses in Manhattan. Program locations are organized by program year
- Sophomores: Harlem
- Juniors: Chinatown
- Seniors: Chelsea
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS
- Graduate of a four-year college or university
- Team-oriented, responsive, active listener who can serve as a role model for young people
- Must uphold Minds Matter NYC’s values of community, commitment, and growth.
- Able to pass a background check
- Available on Saturdays

Description
Since 1991, Minds Matter has helped thousands of underserved students reach their potential in high school, college, and beyond. Providing students with a Community of Opportunity(tm) is the heart of Minds Matter’s vision for change. More than 600 volunteers give their time to Minds Matter every week as mentors, writing advisors, program leaders, and more.
During their three years in the program, students participate in a holistic preparation program that focuses on their individual needs. Each student in Minds Matter is paired with two adult mentors who guide, challenge, and celebrate them through their three-year journey. Students also receive tutoring in writing and math skills, as well as SAT prep. Every student has the chance to explore their interests through summer programs at top universities and by taking advantage of professional experiences and internships through Minds Matter’s corporate partnerships.
