About Braille Institute of America, Inc. (Los Angeles Center)

Location:

741 N Vermont Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90029, US

Mission Statement

Braille Institute is committed to eliminating blindness and severe sight loss as barriers to a fulfilling life. Through educational training, programs, and services, we help tens of thousands of people each year regain and maintain their independence. We serve to enable families, friends, and others to understand the realities of sight loss. We also inform and educate the public about the capabilities of people who are visually impaired. Our educational, social, and recreational programs are provided in an environment of hope and encouragement, seeking to reinforce the confidence, self-esteem, and dignity of those who are visually impaired and enabling them to live, attend school, and work as they choose.

Description

Volunteers are needed in Braille Library to assist with various clerical duties, e.g., greet guests, contact patrons via telephone, basic check-ins, which may include checking on lapsed or inactive library user accounts for deletion. Volunteers are also needed to check in devices such as Victor Readers and digital players. Investigate use of BARD, e.g., difficulties, successes, need for assistance in how to use software. Depending on experience and comfort level, volunteers are needed to participate in outreach email campaigns, assisting with drafting emails, letters, and marketing teases aimed at various constituents, organizations, and stakeholders. Assist Library Outreach Manager as needed.

Assist students in library, cafeteria, classrooms, and other areas as needed, maintaining a professional and friendly attitude. Volunteers are needed to instruct (voluntary and needs-based) or assist instructors with various non-core courses (e.g. art, music, dance, exercise, etc.) based on experience, skillset, and availability. Volunteers will also assist various departments as needed, which may include housekeeping in the cafeteria or other areas.
