Under One Roof Fiber Arts is a program of Sub-Saharan Youth & Family Services in Minnesota. We are dedicated to teaching sewing and fiber arts to African immigrant women in the Twin Cities. UOR is looking for people who love sewing and would like to share their knowledge with motivated students in a classroom setting. We are committed to offering positive & encouraging instruction to students, and we believe that sharing sewing & craft knowledge is a great way to build & strengthen community.
We need volunteers who want to help out with existing classes as well as folks who are interested in teaching their own classes. Our current classes are focused on garment sewing, but we've offered classes in quilting, bag-making, and really any type of sewing that volunteers want to teach & students want to learn. Teaching can be a short- or long-term commitment-we do both ongoing classes and one-off classes focused on a specific project. We're also hoping to start offering Open Studio hours to our more experienced students. For that, we’ll need Studio Aides to be in the studio with students to offer support & encouragement as they work on their own projects. If you're not sure whether you're ready to teach a class on your own, or if you just want a lower-commitment position, we always need more Teacher’s Aides. Helping a teacher during class is a great way for you to get involved with UOR without having the pressure of leading an entire class.
Classes are currently scheduled Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday from 10am-noon, and Saturday from 10-1 and 2-5pm. If those hours don't make sense with your schedule, please apply anyway! We're working hard on adding more classes & Open Studio hours. We can only expand our offerings through the support of new volunteers like you. We acknowledge & appreciate that our volunteers are donating their labor hours to help our program and our students. We'll work with your schedule to find something that works for you & our students, and we’ll offer whatever training & support you need to succeed. Happy volunteers make happy students!
Most of our students are originally from Sub-Saharan Africa (primarily Somalia and Ethiopia), so you must be comfortable working with people who speak English as a second (or 3rd/4th/5th) language. Experience with ESL programs is a plus--in a sense, we're teaching ESL sewing. If you speak Somali, Oromo, or Amharic, even better! This opportunity is open to sewists of all skill-levels, from beginners to lifelong sewists. If you were interested enough to click on this listing--we need your help and we will find something that works with your schedule & ability level.
