Job Description

The Sandy Hook Foundation is seeking volunteers that will be responsible for working in retail sales in the SHF store and engaging with visitors at the historic Spermaceti Lifesaving Station No. 2 on Sandy Hook. The building is a shared space between the Foundation and the National Park Service, and in May 2024 SHF will be opening the building to the public for tours, enjoyment, and a place to sit and relax, and which will include a retail section of the space set up to sell merchandise with profits returning to support our work in the park. Additionally, public programs will be run from the Lifesaving Station and the building will be open to the public. Our goal is to complement the visitor experience with the addition of opportunities to speak with representatives of the foundation and shop.

Responsibilities

General

  • Ideally a commitment to work one 4-5 hour shift per week from Memorial Day through October (shifts available Thursday through Sunday) - or commitment to several shifts during the 2024 season
  • Responsible for finding coverage for your shift within the volunteer pool if the need arises
  • Travel to and from the park in a personal vehicle (no fee for parking while volunteering)
  • Able to lift up to 20 lbs, traverse stairs.

Store Operations

  • Positively represent the SHF at all times in dealing with the staff, the public, fellow volunteers and NPS.
  • Accurately use POS system to check out customers
  • Assist with the replenishment of inventory on the sales floor
  • Help customers find styles and sizes
  • Maintain a neat and visually appealing store set up
  • Accurately update sales and inventory reports
  • Learn basic history of Spermaceti and Sandy Hook as well as open resources to aid customers and park visitors
  • Help open and/or close the store following operational procedures

Desired Qualifications

  • Retail experience a plus but not required
  • Tech savvy - comfortable learning and using multiple platforms to conduct retail transactions and to ensure accurate sales and inventory data
  • Effective communication skills across a variety of situations
  • Commitment to SHF mission in daily tasks and interactions with the public

    Sunday mornings Memorial Day through Labor Day (you don't have to commit to all Sundays)
  • 11:00 AM to 04:00 PM EST - Spots available: 10+
    Thursdays from Memorial Day through Labor Day availability (you don't have to commit to all Thursdays)
  • 11:00 AM to 04:00 PM EST - Spots available: 10+
    Fridays Memorial Day through Labor Day needed (you don't have to commit to all Fridays)

Description

The first official meeting of The Sandy Hook Foundation (SHF) was held on August 17, 1989 and the fledgling foundation set goals to restore and preserve the historic structures at Fort Hancock and support programs and priorities of the park when federally allocated funding was not enough. Today, SHF continues its mission for the enjoyment of all who use and love Sandy Hook.

  • Orientation or Training
  • Ideally, we are looking for a commitment of one shift a week from Memorial Day through Labor Day, it does not have to be the same shift every week. Shifts are 4-5 hours and you'll be at the beach!
  • You will need to be able to get to Sandy Hook with your own vehicle, be tech savvy enough to be comfortable and accurate with check out apps, be able to occasionally lift boxes of merchandise, and traverse stairs in an historic building.
