In Garden Club, we utilize indoor tower gardens or outdoor gardens to individuals with intellectual disabilities about where food comes from. The goal of this class is to increase fruit and vegetable consumption. This class is 16 sessions long, with each session being about 60 minutes, but we are flexible!

Cooking from the Garden teaches the fundamentals of nutrition through the basics of gardening, food groups, and cooking. This class is 8 sessions long, with each session being 45-60 minutes, but we are flexible!

Mission Statement

The mission of Special Olympics Florida is to provide year-round sports training and competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for people with intellectual disabilities who wish to participate, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in the sharing of gifts, skills, and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes, and the community. The ultimate objective of Special Olympics Florida is to help people with intellectual disabilities participate as productive and respected members of society at large, by offering them a fair opportunity to develop and demonstrate their skills and talents through sports training and competition, and by increasing the public’s awareness of their capabilities and needs.

Description

Healthy Communities is a model Special Olympics Health program addressing the severe health disparities faced by people with intellectual disabilities (ID) through immediate and long-term community-based solutions. Healthy Communities is working to increase access to quality health care and prevention programming to improve the health status of people with ID.

To address the health disparities faced by people with ID, Special Olympics Healthy Communities program offers the following programs:

Health screenings in 8 different disciplines known as Healthy Athletes
Year-round health, fitness, and wellness programs offered at Adult Day Training centers, schools, and recreation centers
Training for health and fitness professionals specific to serving persons with a vast array of intellectual and developmental disabilities
Opportunities to participate in community sports fitness and Special Olympics programs
