About Big Brothers Big Sisters Bay Area's Program: Our urgent and essential mission is to create and support one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth. We pair young people referred to our program by parents, guardians, teachers and social workers with a screened, qualified volunteer adult mentor through a comprehensive matching process, which emphasizes compatibility, commitment, and child safety.

Who we serve: We serve and support children and youth 8-18 years old across all nine greater Bay Area Counties (Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano & Sonoma). The vast majority of our participants are low-income, most live in a household headed by a single parent, and 30% are missing parent(s) due to incarceration.

About Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Bay Area

Location:

1230 Preservation Park Way, Oakland, CA 94612, US

Mission Statement

Our Mission is to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported 1-to-1 relationships that change their lives for the better, forever. Providing a child with a Big Brother or Big Sister - someone they can look up to, explore the world with, put their trust in - can be life-changing. Just by spending one-on-one time with a special friend who offers new experiences and new choices, a child learns more about the world and their own place in it. From the moment they are matched with a mentor a door is opened, and the future is full of possibilities. With your help, we can open that door for hundreds more kids in the Bay Area.

Description

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Bay Area is an mentoring organization that matches adult and high school volunteers with children from age six to sixteen.. Volunteers (called Big Brothers and Big Sisters) serve as positive role models and friends to the children with whom they are matched (called Little Brothers and Little Sisters). As a result of having a caring adult Big in their lives, our Littles are better equipped to communicate with adults and peers, make healthy choices, and achieve academically. Bigs find that spending time with their Littles is a fun way to make a big difference.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Bay Area Program Descriptions

The Community-based Mentoring Program is the cornerstone program of Big Brothers Big Sisters and has been refined over a hundred year history. In this program, we match one youth, or "Little", with one carefully screened adult mentor, or "Big". The Big, the Little, and the child's parent/guardian make a minimum one year commitment to the relationship. The matches meet at least twice a month; there are no mandated activities, as it is the level of connection formed between youth and mentor - rather than what they do together - that is the most significant factor in cultivating positive outcomes. We provide ongoing training and professional support to all volunteers, contributing to healthy, lasting relationships.
