Dates Volunteer/Internships Dates: June 8th - August 5th, 2024 (8 weeks)

Flexible Option: Dates for the flexible internship can be negotiated, but interns must be available between June 8th and August 5th, 2024 for a minumum 4 week commitment. Positions Available Below are the required and/or preferred arrival dates for Staff based on specific positions. There are two possible arrival dates, June 8th and June 15th. Flexible internship applicants may request a later arrival date. Based upon your availability you may apply for one or more of the following positions:

  • Stage Manager (June 8th, mandatory)
  • Choreographer (June 8th, mandatory)
  • Assistant Choreographer (June 8th, June 15th or later)
  • Assistant Media Director (June 8th, June 15th or later)
  • Assistant Producer (June 8th, June 15th or later)
  • Assistant Director (June 8th or June 15th)
  • ​Assistant Music Director (June 8th or June 15th)
  • Costume Designer (June 8th, June 15th or later)
  • Assistant Technical Director (June 8th, June 15th or later)
  • Other positions are available including: Props Master, Pit Orchestra Musicians, Assistant Stage Manager, Dramaturg, Acting Coach, House Manager, Vocal Coach, Dance Coach, Stagehands, Lighting Designer/Operator, Sound Designer/Operator, Hair & Make-up, Scenic Designer, Stage Carpentry, Accompanist (June 8th, June 15th or later)

Please read the detailed job requirements and responsibilities on the PARTICIPATE tab of our website before applying. Our staff is a flexible, multidisciplinary team. Interns will be accepted into the program with a specific position, but should expect to take on a variety of responsibilities outside of the traditional tasks association with that position. We expect you to be forthcoming about your strengths as well as willing to help in areas with which you are less familiar.

These are intense, full-time positions. Interns work 8 - 10 hours per day and have one day off per week.

Required Qualifications
  • At least 18 years of age
  • High-school graduate; at least one year of college/university or equivalent work experience strongly preferred
  • Passion for musical theatre and working with children/youth
  • Experience working with children/youth/adults/elders
  • Interest in and open mind towards immersion in a new culture
  • Flexibility, patience and maturity
  • Leadership experience
  • Proficiency in your area of expertise
  • Commitment to abide by our drug/alcohol policy
  • Willingness to learn some Spanish (Spanish proficiency is valued but not required)
  • Have an open-minded and respectful approach to peaceful conflict resolution
  • Love for nature, sustainability and environmental conservation
  • Ability to work with performers who have little to no experience
  • Creativity and willingness to work in a non-traditional theatre setting where resources are limited

Deadline: Applications will be open from January 15th to May 20th. We consider internship applications on a rolling basis. Thus, we encourage you to submit your application early in order to secure your preferred position. Cost of Participation & Financial Aid Far Corners Community Musical Theatre is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, and our program has an extremely limited budget. All international interns must contribute financially; many receive funding from their colleges/universities to cover part or all of the internship fee. We are happy to provide supporting documents needed in the process of applying for funding through your institution or receiving credit for your internship.

The volunteer/internship fee is as follows:
  • Full Internship: $3000
  • Flexible Internship: $2000 (depending on number of weeks)

The fee does NOT include airfare.

The internship fee includes:
  • Room & board (3 meals per day) with a Costa Rican host family
  • Weekly laundry with host family
  • Work-related transportation within Costa Rica
  • Some tours and activities with participants
  • Training and supervision
  • Spanish for Theatre classes for beginning and intermediate speakers

Need-based financial aid is available for international interns, covering up to 30-40% of the internship fee. Full scholarships are ONLY available to local Costa Rican interns.​

The internship fee does not cover round-trip airfare to Costa Rica (Juan Santamaria International Airport, SJO) from your home country. Current roundtrip airfare for these dates from major US airports $400 to $800 for West Coast and $200 to $500 for the East Coast.

Additional Opportunities
  • Spanish Language Study: There is an excellent Spanish-language school in Monteverde offering small-group (one to four students) conversational Spanish classes at levels with Costa Rican teachers. For those doing the full internship, we can arrange for you to take a one-week intensive class (4 hours per day) at an approximate cost of $300. If you are doing the short internship, or if you would like to take additional weeks of class, you can do so before or after the internship dates. The school also offers university credit, or you may be able to obtain credit through your university.
  • College Credit: Your university may offer you course credit for your internship with Far Corners Community Musical Theatre. We are happy to assist you with necessary documentation - please inform us as soon as possible about the requirements.
  • Travel: Costa Rica is a beautiful, interesting, and inexpensive travel destination frequented by young backpackers from around the world. While you will NOT have time to travel during your internship, we encourage you to travel before or after the program if you are interested. It is easy to travel from Costa Rica by bus to other parts of Central America. We are happy to provide you with tips and "insider" information as you make your plans.

Description

Far Corners Community Musical Theatre stages musicals in communities where, due to economic limitations or geographic isolation, opportunities for participation in the arts have been limited or nonexistent. FCCMT volunteer staff members act as the producers, directors, musical directors and choreographers. The cast and crew are drawn from the local community as well as international program participants.
