Shelter Children’s Program Volunteers provide essential support to our Shelter Children’s Advocate, assisting with children’s groups, and overseeing free playtime while the moms are in the support groups and house meetings. The Shelter Children's Program Volunteer provides information, support, and positive mentoring to children residing in the shelter. This position come with many challenges but is infinitely rewarding.
Required skills: As this position involves working directly with children functioning in crisis mode, amazing interpersonal skills, patience and understanding, a respect for boundaries, and a gentle yet firm and guiding manner are needed. A love of kids and a love of play are also essential! A background in education or child development is also a plus. Mandatory training must be completed before beginning volunteer work.
Time Commitment: Groups are held on Tuesday, Wednesday evenings from 7pm until 8pm and Thursdays at 1pm. An ongoing commitment is required. Volunteers that can commit to all groups are greatly appreciated as it provides consistency and familiarity to the children.
Essential Functions:
- Present positive adult role model
- Assist with youth advocates with activities
- Engage with children of diverse ages and backgrounds
- Create and administer educational activities
- Organize and clean the playroom
- Clean and sanitize toys as needed
- Assist with projects as needed
