Opportunity Title: Ayuda English Tutor

Opportunity Description: We are seeking volunteers that are TEFL certified or those who have significant ESL instruction experience to assist our clients on their journey to English proficiency. As many of those we support start their new lives in the US, improving their English abilities is a common goal. Whether to expand job opportunities, continue schooling, access resources, or connect more intimately within their community, developing English proficiency can be helpful in the continuation toward self-sufficiency. This assistance will greatly benefit our clients for the variety of reasons noted above and many more beyond those mentioned!

Volunteers assisting will connect with our clients for individual sessions that can occur in person or virtually. Given the certifications and/or experience volunteers have, they are expected to formulate the lesson plans. And while encouraged to utilize their own teaching materials, we do have resources to share that can be used.

Noted below are other specifics about this opportunity and pre-requisites, but volunteers at a minimum will need certification and/or minimum experience in addition to completing a full background check. Volunteers will need to meet the minimum commitment required with flexibility to offer during evening and weekend hours. Volunteers should be technological savvy, especially if instructing virtually, and will need to have a WhatsApp account to communicate with students.

Responsible to: Our Volunteer Coordinator Connor Paul

Responsibilities:

  • Manage bookings calendar including availability, time away, sessions offering, and information requested in sign up
  • Check calendar and/or email to confirm sign ups and receive student contact information
  • Connect with students receive bookings from to introduce self, confirm date/time, and share meeting link in advance if needed
  • Assess students' initial abilities to tailor lesson plans and instructions to best meet their current level and goals
  • Draft lesson plans and organize materials to provide structured learning for the students
  • Meet with students, either virtually or in person, to teach prepared materials and provide English instruction
  • Provide outside assignments for students to complete in between sessions for review in subsequent sessions
  • Engage students in between classes using WhatsApp and other platforms
  • Provide updates to our Volunteer Manager and record in tracker, address any attendance or behavioral issues if needed

Opportunity Qualifications:

  • Required:
    • Aged 18+ or older
    • TEFL/TESL Certification OR two years of English as a second language instruction (paid or unpaid)
    • Successful completion of a background check in addition to costs associated
    • Technologically savvy, Comfortable with virtual instruction
    • Knowledge/experience using Microsoft Office, WhatsApp, and Zoom
    • Excellent interpersonal and verbal skills, able to communicate with individuals of all different backgrounds and ages
    • Polite, courteous, and a positive disposition
    • Creativity, able to think outside the box
  • Preferred:
    • Previous experience working to assist low-income individuals, immigrants, refugees, or survivors of domestic abuse/sexual assault/trauma
    • Bilingual, ability to speak with clients in their native/heritage language (Spanish, French, Dari, Tagalog, Amharic, among others)

Commitment: Participation in this opportunity is a medium to long-term commitment. Volunteers must offer two 30-minute sessions a week for bookings at a minimum but are encouraged to offer more. In person sessions can only occur during business hours to ensure oversight, virtual sessions can occur during evenings and weekends.

Technology Needed: Volunteers will need their own laptop or phone to participate in this opportunity and reliable internet connection. Volunteers should be comfortable using Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Bookings, Teams) in addition to WhatsApp and Zoom.
