Join Our Team - If you have a background in finance and/or fund development and a passion for animals, we have a position for you. The Michigan Pet Alliance is seeking to fill a vacancy on our volunteer board of directors. Our statewide membership nonprofit professional trade association represents Michigan’s animal welfare organizations and pet advocates.

Our working board members champion the importance of exceptional board leadership and believe that every organization needs a strong and effective board to fully realize its potential for good. In addition to the standard roles and responsibilities of a board member, our board members are active advocates and ambassadors for the organization and are fully engaged in identifying and securing the financial resources and partnerships necessary for Michigan Pet Alliance to advance its mission.

As a small not for profit with fairly simple financial accounting, MPA has a single committee, that this board member will help to lead, working to identify and secure revenue while assuring the funds received are appropriately spent and accounted for. With a duel focus the committee requires members with strong finance skills and experience along with those well versed in fundraising. The board liaison to the committee is the Board Treasurer, who may choose to chair the committee or have co-chairs with expertise in each area. The committee will meet as a whole and may meet as subcommittees of finance and fund development. In addition to the MPA Treasurer the CEO, and Bookkeeper are standing committee members. Responsibilities include:

  • Establish a Finance Committee/Fund Development Committee of volunteers with members with expertise and experience in finance and fundraising.
  • Assist with building and managing the operating budget and long-term capital/program budget.
  • Establish and monitor financial goals and plans.
  • Review and approve financial reports and statements.
  • Oversee internal controls and audit processes.
  • Present financial work and report to the board of directors
  • Understand and abide by rules and laws that govern nonprofit fiscal management.
  • Lead the board’s participation in resource development and fund raising.
  • Develop MPA’s fund development plan.
  • Propose policies and develop plans, procedures, and schedules for board involvement in fund raising.
  • Create a fund development plan.
  • Work with staff to implement the strategies of the fund development plan within stated timeframes.
  • Establish task forces as needed to carry out specific fund development activities.
