We love our volunteers!

College/University Interns working with reach 180 will be allowed to participate in the following ways during the course of the program, September through December and/or January through May (based on performance evaluation due dates at the end of each semester). Interns can serve multiple semesters:

  • Commit and show up-These kids have had too many people in their lives not follow through with commitments. Continuing to show up is a top priority and establishes trust between you and the youths.
  • Participate with the youth in ensemble-building and problem-solving activities while shadowing staff facilitators
  • Be a friend and confidante while maintaining appropriate professional distance and be a liaison between the youth and the other adult staff members
  • Watch and listen-keen observation is an important skill in discovering what’s underneath the behavior
  • Assist youth with sports, drama, art or other projects and use project time to build relationships with youth
  • Help students prepare for showcases without forcing them to do so; remember the process is more important for these kids than the end result
  • Review the lesson plan prior to every session and be willing to facilitate an activity if it correlates with one of your internship objectives
  • Assist with give-back events, field trips, and performance nights if your schedule permit
  • Be on-site 2 days a week

There is no compensation for this internship. You are to keep up with hours and paperwork as required by your school and to ask for any evaluations, reports, and/or signatures with at least 2 days’ notice.

Internships are contingent on the capacity for reach 180 to meet the objectives required by your internship, your potential to fulfill the tasks outlined above as determined by a face-to-face interview, and a satisfactory criminal history report.
