Digital Oral History Archivist (DOHA) Internship

ORGANIZATION: 1947 PARTITION ARCHIVE

Apprenticeship (1 year) - 10 hrs/week. 480 hours. Go from novice to practitioner as an archivist. This position builds not only copy-editing, observation, data-entry, and data-management skills but also problem-solving, critical thinking, and detective skills in a large archival data set. As an apprentice, you will also learn how to audit and critically analyze and review oral history recorded narratives. Apprentices are expected to be advanced in their skills and career-ready upon graduation.

Internship (6 months) - 10 hrs/week. 240 hours over six months. Train to become a digital archivist. Learn the nuance of archiving oral history interviews within a modern digital archive. Learn a new skill and practice it while helping to build the archive. In-Person position. For USA only.

Internship Time Period

TWELVE MONTHS POSITION: Position opens every quarter. Apprentice needs to commit a minimum of 10 hours each week. Minimum 12 months commitment. SIX MONTHS POSITION: Position opens twice a year. Intern needs to commit a minimum of 10 hours each week. Minimum 6 months commitment. In-person position at our Berkeley, California office. Person must be based in North America (USA).

Job Description

FOCUS: Content Editing

o Learn advanced editorial skills for publishing sensitive content, especially witness narratives

o Copy-edit and curate ​incredible life stories for publishing

o Use storytelling techniques to curate content for various online platforms, including social media

o Assist in developing strategic program for publishing to digital media sites

Job Requirements

o Excellent written skills

o A talent for forming and telling stories

o Copy editing skills preferred but not required

o Working knowledge and some previous experience of web/social media especially Twitter and Facebook

o Strong passion for preserving history and raising awareness for Partition stories

Internship Expectations

The 1947 Partition Archive’s social media presence attracts high traffic and thus requires sophisticated management.

Only serious interns may apply for this position. Interns are expected to develop ownership of their projects and encouraged to develop creative solutions. Intern must have a strong passion for and dedication to our mission and goals. Interns will receive relevant training, fieldwork experience as well as guaranteed references for those who complete their internship term. Successful interns, at the end of their tenure, will be considered for any paid positions that may be available.

Interns may apply for academic credit or funding through their college or university.

The Partition of British India in 1947 was a major 20th century event that affected millions of lives and played a key role in shaping the world in which we live today, both culturally and geopolitically. Nearly two million lost their lives and 15 million people were displaced, making it the largest mass migration. The 1947 Partition Archive is a grassroots non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the fast disappearing memory of Partition by capturing and preserving the people's history through crowd-sourced oral history collection.
