Looking to give back this summer? Become a CitySprouts Summer Volunteer!

Help take care of CitySprouts’ Boston and Cambridge school gardens by watering and weeding twice a week. No garden experience required - all are welcome. We give you an orientation and guide you along the way. You choose a garden near you and your schedule. You are welcomed into a small community of volunteers that all take care of your garden. And a bonus: as a thank you for keeping the gardens thriving, you can take home produce that is ready to be harvested!

Our 24 school gardens are located at every Cambridge public school (12 of them!), and in 12 gardens in Roxbury, Dorchester and Brighton. More information can be found here: https://www.citysprouts.org/volunteeropportunities.

Mission Statement

The CitySprouts mission is to cultivate curiosity and wonder with hands-on science learning through urban gardens. For more than twenty years, CitySprouts has partnered closely with public elementary schools in Cambridge and Boston to provide opportunities for children to learn by exploring the natural world as part of their school journey. CitySprouts is committed to greater equity in science education and children’s access to nature no matter where they live.

Description

CitySprouts Garden Educators currently teach in 24 public schools where they also maintain thriving school garden classrooms; 12 in Cambridge neighborhoods and 12 in Boston. We engage students from Pre-K to 8th grade in our in-school Early Start in Science programs and our after school and summer Green Team Program.

CitySprouts reaches children from the age of 3, when they begin their school journey, until age 14 when they graduate from middle school. Our two programs take place in and around public school gardens, making them familiar and accessible places in the neighborhood where young people live, learn and play. The CitySprouts program is supported in part through district-wide service contracts with the cities of Boston and Cambridge. Unique in the country, the two-decade public-nonprofit partnership has resulted in more green space in schools, an increase in outdoor learning, and a commitment to making elementary science education accessible to students of all backgrounds and learning styles.
