VOLUNTEER JOB DESCRIPTION

Position Overview

At Believe in Me, we envision a future where every child has the self-confidence they need to succeed. We are a dedicated team, funding and supporting children's charities that provide marginalized kids with a safe place to call home, a loving family, a sense of community, and ample opportunities to learn, grow, self-esteem, and experience joy. We are currently developing the 1st Gen College Hub app, aimed at empowering first-generation college students with comprehensive resources, personalized guidance, and a supportive community.

Role Summary:

Believe in Me is seeking a dedicated Volunteer Accessibility Specialist to join our team in developing the 1st Gen College Hub app, a transformative platform aimed at empowering first-generation college students. As an Accessibility Specialist, you will play a critical role in ensuring that our app is accessible and inclusive, providing an equitable user experience for people with disabilities. Your expertise will help us adhere to best practices and legal standards for digital accessibility, aligning with our mission to support every student's success.

Key Responsibilities
  • Accessibility Auditing: Conduct thorough accessibility audits of the app's design and functionalities, using both automated tools and manual testing methods to identify accessibility barriers.
  • Standards Compliance: Ensure the app meets or exceeds Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA standards, as well as complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and other relevant legislation.
  • Collaboration with Development Teams: Work closely with the UI/UX design, development, and content teams to provide actionable recommendations for improving accessibility.
  • Training and Advocacy: Educate team members on the importance of accessibility, sharing knowledge on best practices and guiding the implementation of accessible solutions.
  • Feedback Implementation: Collaborate with the Quality Assurance (QA) team to prioritize and address accessibility issues identified during testing.
  • User Testing Coordination: Facilitate user testing sessions with participants who have disabilities to gather insights on usability and accessibility improvements.
  • Documentation: Maintain comprehensive documentation of accessibility guidelines, audit results, and remediation strategies to ensure ongoing compliance and improvement.
Qualifications
  • Demonstrated experience in web or mobile app accessibility evaluation and compliance is preferred. Familiarity with accessibility standards (WCAG, ADA) and laws is essential.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail. Proficiency in using accessibility testing tools and methodologies. Excellent communication skills for effective collaboration and advocacy.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of accessibility trends, tools, and technologies. Understanding of the various ways users with disabilities interact with digital content.
  • A passion for inclusivity and a commitment to creating an accessible digital environment for all users. Ability to approach challenges creatively and collaboratively.
  • Commitment to volunteering 2-3 hours per week for content strategy and production tasks.

  • Strong communication skills, capable of working collaboratively with a remote, volunteer-based team.
  • A passion for cybersecurity and a commitment to using your skills to make a positive impact in the community.
Location

This is a remote volunteering position with flexible hours to accommodate volunteers from various time zones.
