Our goal is to gather price data in a standardized format from every Washington funeral home. PMA will then organize and analyze this information to create a pricing guide for consumers, posted publicly on the internet. This info helps PMA determine fair prices and report on market changes.

What this means for volunteers is searching online for price lists. If not available by websites, we will resort to emailing and calling funeral homes to acquire their price lists. This work can be done from anywhere and at your own pace. Data collection/input tools will be made available for volunteers (in the form of Google Sheets and Google Forms). If you are interested in any of the data analysis work, please include that in your outreach to us.

People's Memorial Association has conducted this price survey every 2 years since 1970. This record of industry practices and changes is crucial to our mission to keep end of life care available and affordable for as many Washingtonians as possible. People's Memorial Association is the oldest consumer advocacy nonprofit in the USA. Our record is a model for all states, and helps hold this notoriously opaque industry accountable.

People’s Memorial Association (PMA) is the trusted resource and thought-leader for funeral choice, education, and advocacy in Washington State. We envision a future where everyone has access to after-death arrangements that reflect their personal values and resources.

Mission Statement

People’s Memorial Association (PMA), is the trusted resource and thought-leader for funeral choice, education, and advocacy in Washington State. We envision a future where everyone has access to after-death arrangements that reflect their personal values and resources.

Description

Founded in 1939, People's Memorial Association serves its members and the general public throughout Washington. PMA was created in the height of the co-operative movement in the U.S. in order to establish an alternative to the high prices and predatory sales practices of the funeral industry. PMA founders set out to provide affordable funeral services that honored the deceased’s social and spiritual values.

In 2007, the members of PMA voted to open a co-operative funeral home in Seattle coined The Co-op Funeral Home of People's Memorial.
