ORGANIZATION: North Central Charter Essential School

The Sizer School Board of Trustees are seeking new volunteer Members to join the Board. The

Sizer School Board is the governing body of the school who is responsible for

ensuring that the academic program is successful, the school’s operations and programs adhere

to the terms of the charter, and the school maintains a positive financial status. The overall

purpose of the Board is to connect the school with the wider community, to provide expertise

to the school, to confer credibility on the school, and to build the long-term stability of the

school.

The Board ensures that the school is in compliance with all applicable state and federal laws. It

also ensures that the Board itself is operating in accordance with the rules set out by all

applicable Massachusetts laws and regulations.

Meetings are held in person or remotely approximately every other month of the year. The time commitment is 3-4 hours each month there is a meeting. Outside of these hours, members are encouraged to participate in school activities and fundraising events.

RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Be an active advocate and ambassador for the mission and vision of the school. Act in accordance with the values of Sizer School.

2. Attend and participate in Board meetings. Prepare for these meetings by reviewing materials and bringing the materials to the meetings.

3. Contribute to the conversations and effective operation of the Board, including but not limited to:

  • Support Board decisions and participate in the appraisal of the performance of the Board.
  • Support the School’s policies and procedures and support the Board’s ground rules for conducting business.
  • Work with other Board members to assure that the Board functions well.

4. Engage in outside meetings including but not limited to committee meetings, renewal meetings, and graduation, among other school activities and events.

5. Assist with recruiting and welcoming new Board members.

6. Help support the charitable contributions of the School by identifying and cultivating relationships with donors, volunteers, and advocates.

7. Be available to serve on a Committee or task force of the Board as a prepared and active participant.

8. Inform the Board of Trustees of any potential conflicts of interest, whether real or perceived, and abide by the decision of the Board related to the situation.

9. Focus on governance and maintain appropriate boundaries with the school and its administration, staff, teachers, and students.

10. Fulfill fiduciary duties and ensure legal and ethical integrity and maintain accountability and confidentiality.

  • We are searching for individuals who are passionate about children's education. Trustees can have varying backgrounds & areas of expertise. Ideally, Trustees are from Fitchburg and the surrounding area. Previous leadership experience is a plus.
