Moores Creek National Battlefield is seeking enthusiastic, friendly volunteers to work in the park's Visitor Center (VC) during the work week and on Saturdays throughout the year. Thousands of people visit the battlefield every year, and especially on weekends, to view the site of the first decisive Patriot victory of the American Revolution and the site of the last Scottish Highland broadsword charge.
Visitor Center Hours: 9 am - 5 pm, Tuesday-Saturday
We are open to full days of volunteering, as well as half days (9 am to 1 pm, or 12 pm to 4 pm). All applicants need to be 16 years of age or older to volunteer without supervision.
Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Greeting Park visitors and providing information on cultural, historical, and natural points of interest within the park and the surrounding area.
- Being available and approachable at the information desk.
- Answering routine questions respectfully and in appropriate detail.
- Using brochures/maps/handouts/common resources as needed to answer involved questions about resources in or near the park.
- Operating the bookstore cash register on a daily basis and/or during special events.
- Stocking and restocking bookstore shelves.
- Maintaining the bookstore area in a properly organized way.
- Maintain visitor counts, maintain a clean front desk and bookstore, assist with minor cleaning, and assist with opening and closing duties.
- Explaining our Junior Ranger programs and providing workbooks.
- Operate audio-visual equipment to show the park's orientation film.
- Supervise visitors in the exhibit area to ensure that exhibits are not climbed on or damaged in any way. Ensure that food, drinks, and pets are kept outside.
- Occasionally assist staff in preparing for and hosting special events.
- Assist visitors with our Audio Tour.
Weather: Summers can be hot, humid and buggy (mosquitoes). The Spring and Fall are cool with rainy periods. Winters are generally mild with occasional windy and cold nor’easter storms.
