Job Purpose:

This position will support the academic growth of children in the classroom by lowering the teacher/student ratio. Members will work directly with students in small groups and one on one, in academic and other school programmatic settings, working in collaboration with the classroom teacher to help ensure engagement throughout the school day.

Responsibilities:

  • Engage with PreK-1st grade students in the classroom alongside a lead teacher.
  • Supervise daily activities including snack, lunch, recess, etc.
  • Attend ongoing professional development, retreats and staff meetings
  • Support with classroom management and addressing student behavior
  • Collaboratively creating and implementing lesson and advisory plans with the lead teacher
  • Participate in all professional development and school wide community events
  • Planning, supporting, and instructing extra-curricular activities such as sports, arts, field trips, and other after school activities
  • Create a safe and nurturing learning environment.
  • Attend and participate in faculty meetings.
  • Maintains professional appearance.

Qualifications and Preferences:

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Experience working with youth, preferably elementary school age
  • Passion for working with children/adolescents from under-resourced communities
  • Dedication to education and the advancement of students’ academic, social, and emotional well-being.
  • Ability to form strong, positive relationships with staff, students, and families.
  • U.S. Citizen or Legal Permanent Resident

1 Shift

  • 07:30 AM to 03:30 PM
    Full-time, Monday through Friday

Description

NDMV teams serve with local partners to expand access to education. NDMV’s primary approach is to offer small-group and 1-on-1 instruction. Members serve in crowded classrooms and community centers. Notre Dame AmeriCorps members serve full-time for 11 months. A local site director oversees and supports members. During the service year, AmeriCorps members receive professional development in the form of biweekly team meetings, a training conference in Maryland, and opportunities for additional training and retreats.
