ORGANIZATION: Alliance for African Assistance

  • 4 people are interested

Provide social capital and integration support for refugees in collaboration with the Alliance for African Assistance. Your support will give the refugees a more diverse experience than their agency staff can offer alone. Volunteers empower the refugees to be contributing members of our society, strengthen host communities, and build powerful bonds. Your work will ultimately help our community be more positive toward refugees and have a more welcoming attitude to newcomers.

A Community Co-sponsorship team is made up of 7 or more volunteers to guide and offer direct services to a refugee family as they navigate the resettlement process. This would involve providing services in core sectors (pre and post arrival) such as reception from airport, preparing safe and suitable housing, social services, cultural orientation, transportation, employment and job training, medical, education, and ESL classes with mentorship.

Opportunity Requirements & Important Notes

Time Commitment: 9 months with first three months time spread among the team members according to their availability and less intense involvement the next 6 months.

Onboarding Process: Application, training, background check, and family match. On average this process takes volunteers 1 month.

Required Skills/Experience: Experience living in the United States

Desired Skills/Experience: Background in social services, teaching English, finance, or housing

Physical Requirements: This project is able to make accommodations for individuals with physical limitations and the space where this project takes place is wheelchair accessible.

Attire: Comfortable approrpriate attire

Note: The time commitment for the project is 9 months, however, only the first three months are crucial in the delivery of core resettlement services with their case managers' collaboration with the team. The following 6 months would involve bi-weekly then monthly check-ins. The team is not required to raise the $3000 emergency fund, but the money needs to be fundraised before the project. As a charitable organization 501(c), Alliance for African Assistance provides documentation for tax-deductible donations. Their organization requires documentation of all services according to the office of Refugee Resettlement and PRM so all services rendered must be communicated to case managers.
