As the Lead Beach-Cleanup Ambassador for Gateway National Recreation Area, you will play a critical role in promoting responsible beach use, environmental stewardship, and the protection of our coastal ecosystems. Also, creating a welcoming and safe environment for beachgoers while fostering a sense of responsibility for the park’s ecosystems. Your leadership will help educate visitors about the importance of clean beaches and inspire them to become active stewards of the environment.


Job Title: Fort Wadsworth Lead Beach-Cleanup Ambassador


Job description: The Lead Beach-Cleanup Ambassador will:

1. Lead and supervise groups and/or projects in the absence of Volunteer Coordinator to ensure effective coverage during peak visitor times.

2. Responsible for leading and conducting beach clean-up activities.

3. Ensure the cleanliness, safety, and overall well-being of the beach environment.

4. Ensure the proper disposal of collected debris and hazardous materials.

5. Create a welcoming and inclusive environment for visitors of all ages and backgrounds

6. Answer questions, provide information, and share knowledge about the park's history, geology, flora, and fauna. 7. Encourage visitors to respect and protect the park's resources.

8. Engage with park visitors to educate them about the importance of maintaining clean beaches, protecting coastal wildlife, and practicing responsible waste disposal.

9. Encourage visitors to participate in beach clean-up efforts and make sustainable choices.

10. Interact with beachgoers to provide information on park regulations, safety protocols, and beach etiquette.

11. Promote conservation and responsible behavior by educating visitors about the park's coastal ecosystems.

12. Assist visitors in need of first aid or emergency assistance and coordinate with park rangers when necessary.

13. Monitor beach conditions and enforce safety regulations, including advising visitors on water safety.

14. Provide first aid and emergency assistance to beachgoers in need, coordinating with park rangers or emergency services as required.

15. Foster a sense of stewardship by sharing the park's conservation efforts and encouraging responsible behavior. 16. Assist Volunteer Coordinator with guidance to groups on park regulations, interpretive techniques, safety protocols, waste disposal, and environmental education.

17. Report any incidents, damage, or safety concerns to park management.

18. Address visitor concerns and resolve issues in a professional and courteous manner.

19. Participate in regular staff meetings and training sessions.

20. May work with a team of volunteer groups. Collaborates with Volunteer Group Leaders to ensure projects flow smoothly.

21. Wear a volunteer uniform while assisting with visitor center operations, special events, and projects.

22. Encourage visitors to respect the park's beach habitats and wildlife by promoting ethical wildlife viewing practices and proper waste disposal.

23. Promote responsible behavior among visitors, including proper disposal of trash and the prevention of littering. 24. Collaborate with park staff to report and address any environmental concerns, such as pollution or wildlife disturbances.

25. Assist in tracking and analyzing trends related to beach cleanliness and visitor engagement.

26. Maintain accurate records of beach usage, visitor demographics, and safety incidents.


Skills needed/preferred: Potential volunteers need experience in public speaking, time management, problem solving, communication & interpersonal skills, organization, and collaboration. Experience in environmental conservation, beach clean-up efforts, outdoor education, or related field. Ability to work independently with little or no supervision. Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions. Customer service-oriented with a positive attitude. Knowledge of coastal ecosystems, marine debris, and the impacts of pollution on wildlife within the park, would be helpful but not necessary. Enthusiasm for environmental conservation and sustainable practices. A background check may be required.


Goal/Outcome of job: To organize and execute successful beach cleanups, rallying community involvement, and promoting environmental awareness. The outcome would ideally be cleaner beaches, reduced marine pollution, and increased public engagement in preserving coastal ecosystems. Additionally, the ambassador might aim to foster long-term sustainability initiatives and partnerships to ensure ongoing conservation efforts.
