Library Volunteer

ORGANIZATION: National Park Service

Ninety Six National Historic Site is recruiting a dedicated volunteer to assist with organizing and maintaining the park’s library.

Duties:

The volunteer will help with a wide array of office work, including but not limited to:

  • Updating the library collection in the NPS Libris System. (requires training and background check)
  • Reorganizing the library collection.
  • Performing shelving and filing of returned library materials.
  • Periodically inventorying sections of the collection using a shelf list, recommending books for removal from library, reshelving books found out of order, and annotating any missing items for the attention of supervisor.
  • Processing newly cataloged materials.
  • Completing housekeeping activities including dusting and vacuuming.

Minimum Commitment

A minimum commitment of 6 hours per week for four months is required.

Knowledge and Skills Desired:

  • Must be 18 or older.
  • Ability to work independently with little or no supervision.
  • Volunteers may be bending, twisting, and lifting frequently. They should be able to do so without injuring themselves. Ability to lift boxes up to 35 pounds.
  • Basic clerical and computer skills.
  • Ability to learn the NPS Libris Cataloging System.
  • Must have good reading and writing skills; have close attention to detail; good penmanship.
  • Have an interest in Library Science.

Selections will be made based on:

  • Living within local commuting distance
  • References and other factors that indicate suitability for this program.
  • A resume must be provided that includes:
  • All positions held within the last 3 years.
  • Other applicable paid work and volunteer experiences. For each listing, include a brief discussion of duties, period of work, hours per week, supervisor, and supervisor contact information.
