Dependency on alcohol or other substances can destroy lives. However, when people recover from dependency, their lives are changed in many ways. People become productive members of society, their health improves, their relationships are renewed, and families are rejoined. It's often nothing short of a miracle. Helping people during their recovery journey is appreciated, rewarding and fun. Be part of the miracle!

North Shores Alano Club (NSAC) in Pacific Beach serves as a safe and welcoming gathering place for people to begin and grow their life in recovery from alcohol and drug addiction. For more than 50 years, the club's active fellowship has helped thousands from all walks of life thrive in sobriety. Today, the club hosts more than 30 12-Step meetings per week and is located just blocks from San Diego's beautiful beaches.

Volunteers will be involved in the day-to-day operations of NSAC. The most important duty is welcoming those who visit or attend meetings at their facility. Also important is encouraging membership, signing up new members and accepting dues; and sales of literature and sobriety tokens. Keeping the club appealing, clean and inviting is important to attract new guests and members.

Opportunity Requirements & Important Notes

Time Commitment: Flexible, but (2) 2-hour shifts per week for at least 2 months is preferred.

Onboarding Process: Volunteers will be given a description of duties, introduction to colleagues and a tour of the facility. This process is typically less than 30 minutes and additional training is provided throughout the duration of volunteer opportunity.

Required Skills/Experience: NSAC is open to people of all ages, ethnicities, genders, orientations and social and cultural backgrounds. Therefore, volunteers must be accepting of all types of people. This position includes interaction with guests and members of North Shores Alano Club, so the most important skill is a pleasant and friendly attitude. While volunteering or in/around NSAC, sobriety and abstinence from drugs and alcohol is a must!

Desired Skills/Experience: Experience with people in recovery is helpful, but not required.

Physical Requirements: A positive, open-minded attitude and friendly demeanor are all that are required. Unfortunately this opportunity is not able to make accommodations for individuals with physical limitations and the space where this project takes place is not wheelchair accessible.

Attire: NSAC is fairly casual. A clean and neat appearance, long pants and shirt with sleeves are required. No logos or emblems that include alcohol, drugs or politics. Closed-toe shoes are required.

Note: The club is open from 8:30am to 9:30pm every day, however the daily noon meeting and evening meetings are the most attended, so volunteering at those hours would be especially helpful. This volunteer position could develop into a permanent, part-time, paid position (if interested).
