Big Bend Cares and Care Point Health & Wellness Center rely on the selfless effort and dedication of volunteers to ensure the success of their programs. We want you to know that your generosity and donation of time does not go unnoticed and is very much appreciated.
What do volunteers do?
- The main role for volunteers is administrative tasks and management of the front desk.
- Every month, this includes assembly and distribution of food bags to our clients.
- Front desk volunteers are responsible for liaising information between the public/clients and the staff.
- Volunteers also help in other departments, from Development and Finance, to Education and Quality Control.
- Duties include data entry, scanning documents, folding and cutting printed materials, assembling educational materials, food bags, administering surveys over phone, inventory and organization, and more.
- There are opportunities for down time during shifts that are ideal for student volunteers, as studying is possible.
Volunteering details
- Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm. No regular weekend or evening shifts, except only a few special events.
- Minimum 2 hour shifts, but they can be scheduled as long or as frequently as fits within availability.
- We only schedule a couple volunteers during any given time, and accept them on a rolling basis based on capacity, first come first served.
- Volunteers who need court-mandated hours will be accepted depending on the charge, and at the discretion of the Chief Development Officer.
Event volunteering
- We need volunteers for special events throughout the year, including Artopia, AIDS Walk, and the Client Holiday Party.
- These events are the only time we accept larger groups of volunteers.
- To volunteer as a group, there will be a field to put the group name, and you’ll get info closer to the events.

About Big Bend Cares

Mission Statement
To advance community wellness for all by providing comprehensive care and promoting sexual health.
Description
Originally known as Tallahassee AIDS Support Services (TASS), Big Bend Cares was formed in 1985 by volunteers in order to provide supportive services to local individuals with HIV/AIDS.
By January 1987, the number of individuals asking for help was increasing rapidly, and the group decided to call an organizational meeting to recruit more volunteers. It was at this meeting that one of the more experienced individuals present suggested that the organization pursue incorporation. TASS became a non-profit corporation on July 1, 1987.
In October 1991, TASS changed its name to Big Bend Comprehensive AIDS Resources, Education & Support, Inc. (Big Bend CARES), in order to more accurately reflect our range of services and our provision area. The new name was chosen by the board from entries submitted in a volunteer contest to rename the organization.
In 2017, Big Bend Cares expanded by opening Care Point Health and Wellness. The vision for Care Point was to be a one-stop-shop for all your healthcare needs. A place where clients and community members can receive primary care, radiology, dental, prescription refills, and lab work all in one location.
Big Bend Cares provides assistance to people living with HIV and conducts HIV prevention and education programs to the general community. Big Bend Cares is the only AIDS Service Organization (ASO) in the eight counties of Area 2B and serves HIV positive individuals in all 8 counties.
