Here at ECAD we are always excited to welcome a new litter of puppies to the family, because we know that they are going to grow up to help people living with disabilities lead a more independent life.
When our puppies are 8 weeks old, they are ready to venture off to their nursery teams. These are amazing volunteers, like you, who open their homes, their lives and their hearts to helping these puppies become the Service Dogs they are meant to be.

How long do the puppies stay with the nursery team?
Nursery families welcome an 8 to 10 week old puppy into their homes for 6 - 7 months with the option of additional stay.

What do nursery teams do? The families will begin to teach the puppy basic commands (sit, come, down, stay, etc.), household manors, and get to explore new and different things. How do I sign up?

It's quick and easy to sign up...all you have to do is complete a short application on our website ecad1.org and a member of our staff will reach out to you.

What does ECAD provide?
ECAD is here for you every step of the way. There is no cost from you at all! We will supply the food, crate and puppy, you supply the love and attention! We also have staff helping you every step of the way with training and any other questions you might have.
Other things you need to know...

1. You must be able to attend one training class a month
2. You must complete weekly progress reports
4. Puppy can't be left home for more than 3 hours at a time.

Still have questions? No problem! Contact us at (860) 489-6550 or email puppy@ecad1.org

Mission Statement

To enable people with disabilites to gain independence and mobility through the use of specially educated dogs.

Description

ECAD was founded by Lu and Dale Picard. When Lu's father suffered a stroke, she saw how much he hated being dependent on her. She taught their family pet to help him rise from a chair and retrieve some items, and noticed that her dad actually became more active and less depressed than when all his help came from a human. Lu saw first hand how Service Dogs could change people's lives, and in 1995 quit her full-time job to start ECAD.
Today ECAD breeds and trains Labs and Golden Retrievers for people with disabilities. ECAD is always looking for volunteers to help further our mission. Our volunteers help us train our dogs and even raise our puppies and help shape them into wonderful service dogs.

Since then ECAD has received a nonprofit status and has grown to have placed over 350 Assistance Dogs nationwide.
