DORIS is committed to connecting the public with the records of the city government maintained in the collections of the Municipal Archives and Library.

Are you interested in putting women back in the historical record? We are looking for volunteers to increase access to our photo collections. Volunteers will search for clues about women who are only described through their husband or father’s name to help identify and record their names in our digital photograph collections.

This is a remote, synchronous event that will last approximately two hours. The event will take place from 11:30pm-1pm EST on Tuesday, April 30th. Training will be done on the day of the event. If you are interested in participating in this project, please fill out this form: https://forms.office.com/g/Pd6cPzBC7q.

To gain a better sense of what this event may look like, you can look at similar projects from the Chicago History Museum (https://www.chicagohistory.org/naming-women-to-recover-histories/) or Columbia University Libraries (https://blogs.cul.columbia.edu/rbml/2020/09/09/eleanor-roosevelt-speaks-for-herself-identifying-1257-married-women-by-their-full-names/).

Once we have edited the description to accurately reflect the individual’s full name, we hope to preserve it in perpetuity at the Municipal Archives and increase exposure to women’s presence in history.

Responsibilities:

  • Work in a team to identify women in our photograph collections who are described only through their husband’s name.
  • Utilize a variety of resources including but not limited to:Historical Vital Records at NYCMA, Ancestry.com, Find a Grave: New York Times, Newspapers.com, and Familysearch.org to conduct research.
  • Review the descriptions for clues and add sources for the identification to the collaborative Excel sheet.
  • Navigate our digital collections platform: https://nycma.lunaimaging.com/luna/servlet/.

Requirements:

  • Must possess strong research skills.
  • Volunteers must be able to work well in a team.
  • Participants must be Internet proficient and have access to a computer.
  • Access to historical newspapers and genealogical databases, like New York Times and Ancestry.com is useful.
  • Understanding of our digital collections and NYC history is a plus.
  • Familiarity with Excel.

You’ll also be able to forward the event to any friends as well! If you have any questions, please email Julia Kim at volunteercoordinator@records.nyc.gov or Israt Abedin at iabedin@records.nyc.gov. Please include [In Her Own Name Project] in the subject.

If you need reasonable accommodations please contact, disabilityservicesfacilitator@records.nyc.gov.
