These events offer a platform for community engagement and cultural celebration. We rely on the dedication and enthusiasm of our volunteers to make these events successful.

HISTORIC EVENTS (ACROSS THE CITY)
Join our dedicated team of volunteers in bringing history to life during our special historical events and celebrations! Our museum commemorates significant moments and figures in history through engaging and educational activities during events such as Patriots Day, the Ghost of Somerville, Veteran’s Day, and our Flag Raising ceremony. About SOMERVILLE HISTORICAL SOCIETY DBA SOMERVILLE MUSEUM

Location:

1 WESTWOOD RD, SOMERVILLE, MA 02143, US

Mission Statement

As the only membership supported, community-based cultural institution of its kind in Somerville, the Somerville Museum is the City of Somerville’s mirror, playing a central role in preserving the past, reflecting the present, and helping to shape the future of this diverse urban community of 81,000. Through its innovative programming, the Museum seeks to engage our audience in an on-going dialogue with local artists, scholars, and educators with the larger aim of fostering cultural education and understanding.

Description

Located in the heart of the City at the intersection of Central Street and Westwood Road, the Somerville Museum has served as the community’s cultural institution for nearly a century. The Museum’s Federal Revival building was constructed in the 1920’s to house the growing collection of the Somerville Historical Society. In the 1980’s, with a changing demographic and the need to expand the mission of the Society, a handful of committed individuals raised the funds to fully renovate and restore the building. The result was the newly consecrated Somerville Museum, which officially reopened in 1988.

While specializing in the visual arts - including many exhibits with both historical and local significance - the Museum also offers musical and lecture series, a number carried out in collaboration with Somerville’s public schools. An important meeting place for local historical and cultural organizations, the Museum has a long tradition of encouraging hands-on learning projects for young and old alike.

As the only membership supported, non-profit, volunteer-run, community-based cultural institution of its kind in Somerville, members and volunteers are always welcome.
