Introduction to Youth Mentorship Project (YMP)

Welcome to the Youth Mentorship Project (YMP), a non-profit organization dedicated to bridging the STEM education gap in local communities by providing access to a comprehensive curriculum. As a 501(c)(3) organization, we are certified to award the President's Volunteer Service Award (PVSA). Our reach extends to over 16 countries, including Sierra Leone, Australia, Mongolia, India, and more, where we provide research and project-related mentorship to students globally.

Our organization has had the privilege of participating in prestigious events such as the United Nation's Science Summit, where we were invited to speak in the opening session. We have also convened our own sessions with distinguished speakers. We are proud to announce that we will be leading a new committee at the United Nations next year and forming a program for the Science Summit and future summits. In addition, we host hackathons, programs, symposiums, and networking events, both independently and in collaboration with other organizations.

Mentorship Roles and Responsibilities

As a mentor with YMP, you will have the unique experience of teaching and mentoring students globally on STEM projects that make a real impact on their local community. You will be able to provide guidance that you wish you had received when you were the mentees’ age. Mentors can range from undergraduate students to industry professionals, and they will be paired with students based on their level of expertise and the specific needs of the students.

Program Structure

Our mentorship program is structured to provide a flexible yet comprehensive learning experience for students. As a mentor, you will be part of this structure, providing guidance and support to students as they navigate their learning journey.

Mentors can opt to mentor pro bono or charge an hourly rate, which will be passed on directly to students with an added 10% commission to cover our operating costs.

  • Onboarding Training: You’ll receive a set of videos to watch to learn about YMP, our mission and core values, as well as how to get started with mentoring a student.

  • Initial Contact: Once you join as a mentor, you will be listed on our platform for matching with a student. Student will be able to reach out to you

  • Regular Check-ins: Once you have matched with a student, you should establish regular check-ins with the students through live meetings. Each student should be given around 10 hours of individual support, at least once every two weeks, though the specific amount of sessions and frequency of meetings can be determined between the student and mentor directly.

  • Ongoing Support: Throughout the program, you will provide ongoing support to your mentees. This includes answering questions, providing feedback on their work, and guiding them through challenges. This ongoing support is key to helping your mentees stay motivated, overcome obstacles, and achieve their learning goals.

Description

The Youth Mentorship Project (YMP) aims to increase education and mentorship for students from disadvantaged backgrounds. At its heart is YMP Match, a platform offering students free access to mentors who are industry professionals and academics in various fields. Leveraging connections, elementary through high school students receive guidance to work on impactful projects that we can provide funds for, and gain access to valuable educational resources. Additionally, we are committed to aid under-represented schools by providing resources and internet infrastructure. With over 1,000 active students in 20+ countries and 10,000 impacted, we look forward to the changes we can continue to make in the future for education and opportunity.
