Chimo Community Services is seeking two dedicated volunteers to serve as ESL Instructors for our English Literacy Conversation Circle, with 2-hour sessions held twice a week starting from April 15, 2024.

Description:

  • Volunteer ESL Instructors will be provided with curricula, lesson plans, and training to conduct small group sessions (4-6 participants) in person, aimed at Canadian newcomers facing challenges with the English language.
  • Sessions will cover listening, reading, writing, and speaking skills, incorporating vocabulary relevant to job searches, workplace communication, and essential life skills.

Skills/Qualifications:

  • Teaching experience is beneficial, along with strong interpersonal communication skills in English and the ability to lead in-person learning sessions.
  • A good understanding of newcomer and refugee needs is essential.

Chimo is a non-profit organization serving people in crisis, transition and through education.

Chimo prevents tragedies and saves lives. Chimo strengthens individuals, families, and communities. Chimo connects people with needed community resources. Chimo builds bridges of understanding.

Created in Richmond, British Columbia in 1973, Chimo Community Services now serves over 10,000 individuals and families each year from different cultural backgrounds, age groups, family lifestyles, and economic situations. Through nine program areas, Chimo provides diverse services from community building to prevention, from individual crisis support to advocacy, and from peer support to education. Chimo engages in collaborative community planning and develops innovative resources to address emerging needs.

Chimo's people - 9 Board members, 30 staff, and 200 volunteers - reflect a range of cultural backgrounds and life experiences, and speak more than a dozen languages.
