Mission Statement

The mission of the Adelphi New York Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline and Support Program is to educate, support, empower, and advocate for breast cancer patients, professionals, and the community.

Description

Adelphi University has a longstanding record of responding to needs in the community. In 1980, the first post mastectomy group began at Adelphi’s School of Social Work, located in Garden City, NY.

Today, we have the oldest breast cancer hotline in the country staffed by professionally trained and supervised volunteers; most are breast cancer survivors. All of our services are completely free and confidential.

Our services include:

  • Our toll-free Breast Cancer Hotline is for New Yorkers with and/or concerned about breast cancer and is staffed by professionally trained and supervised volunteers, all of whom are breast cancer survivors, and is available daily from 9 AM to 9 PM.
  • We provide licensed Social Work Services (in English and Spanish) which includes counseling, crisis intervention and referrals, in person, on the phone and via ZOOM.
  • Support Groups are facilitated for individuals and include groups for newly diagnosed, women with metastatic or Stage 4 disease, women under 40, Creative Arts, recurrence of breast cancer; we also provide two Spanish-language support groups.
  • Community Outreach our volunteers and public health educators are available at no cost to provide breast health education at community events including church meetings, health fairs, libraries, women’s groups and other forums.

  • Must be at least 21
  • Orientation or Training
  • 12 hours of volunteer training, from 10am-1pm dates to be determined, and then 2 hours a week.
