Recruiting Organization: Dollar For

Dollar For is currently seeking to expand our board to add additional expertise in nonprofit accounting and financial management. This new member would likely fill the treasurer role and would help to review and support the financial health of the organization.

While day-to-day operations are led by Dollar For’s executive director, the Board-ED relationship is a partnership, and the appropriate involvement of the Board is both critical and expected.

Leadership, Governance & Oversight Responsibilities
  • Attend quarterly virtual or in-person Board meetings
  • Review the agenda and supporting materials prior to board and committee meetings
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to the ED as he develops and implements Dollar For’s strategic plan
  • Review outcomes and metrics created by Dollar For to evaluate its impact, performance, and effectiveness
  • Contribute to an annual performance evaluation of the ED
  • Approve Dollar For’s annual budget, audit reports, and material business decisions
  • Ensure that the board remains informed of, and meets all, legal and fiduciary responsibilities
  • Partner with the ED and other board members to ensure that board resolutions are carried out
  • Serve on committees or task forces and take on special assignments as requested
  • Ensure Dollar For’s commitment to a diverse board and staff that reflects the communities Dollar For serves.
Networking, Fundraising & Advancement Responsibilities
  • Represent Dollar For to stakeholders and partners as an ambassador for the organization
  • Assist the ED and board chair in identifying and recruiting other Board Members
  • Identify and cultivate potential donors from among your personal and professional networks
  • Introduce the organization’s leadership to your personal and professional networks

Additionally, Dollar For Board Members should consider the organization as one of their top three philanthropic priorities, and make annual gifts that reflect that priority. So that Dollar For can credibly solicit contributions from foundations, organizations, and individuals, Dollar For hopes that 100% of Board Members make an annual contribution at a level that feels personally significant and within their giving capacity.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Proven experience in nonprofit financial management
  • Ability to empathize and understand the challenges and opportunities that people facing medical debt face
  • Clear commitment to equity in all work, including co-creation and co-leadership of programs and advocacy with people most impacted by medical debt
  • Written and verbal communication skills to easily interact with community leaders, organizers, and residents
  • Critical thinking and decision-making to plan the best course of action for the organization
  • Previous work and personal experience with marginalized communities and/or personal experience with medical debt or charity care is a huge plus!
  • Additional experience in other key strategic areas of the board is also a plus! These include: fundraising, health law or policy, health care delivery (direct care or administration), patient lived experience, or advocacy

Service on Dollar For’s Board of Directors is without remuneration, except for administrative support, travel, and accommodation costs in relation to Board Members’ duties.

Board Members will serve a one-year term and are eligible for re-appointment.
