Recruiting Organization: The Red Door Place
Bridging the Gap(BTG) is a new program starting at The Red Door Place, a food pantry located in Greenwich Village. The program will address the mental health challenges that many of our pantry guests face. BTG is an on-site referral (not counseling) service that takes place during the pantry hours every Tuesday, from 1p-5p.
The Resource Coordinators will meet with guests, connect them to NYC mental health services (using an established database), and follow-up on their progress. Training and supervision is offered. The time commitment is weekly on Tuesday afternoons.
The ideal candidate for this volunteer position is reliable, can make a weekly commitment, has good boundaries, is empathic, and able to use a computer for light data entry. See below for the kinds of volunteers who might find this opportunity exciting.
- Retired educators, school counselors, and other professionals
- Retired Psychotherapists, Social Workers, Family Therapists, Psychologists
- Bachelor level psychology/social work/counseling students who need real client contact experience before applying to a masters program
- Masters level students in helping professions or social justice programs studying issues such as food insecurity, mental health, the unhoused, asylum seekers, LGBTQ+ youth
