YOU! Your presence, your being-- not doing-- is what a hospice patient needs. Be present. Be you. Be a good listener. Be compassionate. Be funny-- unless you're not. Just. Be. You.
At end-of-life a person might be lonely, may not have family nearby, or any living family left, may not like their family or vice versa. Sometimes friends and family feel like they don't know what to say (you don't have to say anything), so they may not visit.
You offer your time and your presence. You may hold a person's hand. You may listen to their stories. You may play some music from your phone or your guitar or your ukulele.
As a hospice volunteer you receive training about the hospice mission, about being part of a hospice team, about end-of-life issues. You will learn about the person you're going to visit before you meet them, and you'll visit them with the hospice volunteer coordinator.
You have so much to offer.
Must pass a background check, TB test, and orientation at your own pace.
