Become a Coach for A Matter of Balance and Make a Difference!
A Matter of Balance is a proven program that helps older adults reduce their fear of falling, increase their activity levels, and improve strength and balance. Through eight engaging, two-hour sessions, participants will learn to manage the fear of falling, set realistic goals, modify their environment to reduce risks, and stay active through exercise.
Who Benefits from A Matter of Balance?
Anyone age 60 or older who:
- Is concerned about falling
- Has experienced a fall in the past
- Limits activities due to fear of falling
- Wants to improve flexibility, balance, and strength
- Is able to problem-solve and live independently
Become a Volunteer Coach:
As a Matter of Balance Coach, you'll be trained to guide participants through this life-changing program. You’ll lead engaging discussions, demonstrate exercises, and support participants in improving their strength, balance, and confidence. We are looking for volunteers who are passionate about helping older adults and willing to commit to facilitating at least two classes within one year of certification.
What You'll Do:
- Work with a co-coach to teach the program to participants
- Prepare for each class by reviewing the provided materials
- Encourage open discussions and interactions among participants
- Demonstrate and coach exercises to improve strength and balance
- Foster a supportive, solution-oriented environment
Training & Commitment:
- Complete 8 hours of coach training and earn certification
- Attend 2.5 hours of annual facilitator training updates
- Agree to facilitate two Matter of Balance classes within one year of certification
What We’re Looking For:
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Enthusiasm, dependability, and leadership skills
- Interest in working with older adults
- Ability to perform low-impact exercises and assist others
- Life experience (healthcare or education background a plus)

The mission of Volunteer Delaware 50+ is to engage persons 50 and older in volunteer service, to meet critical community needs, and provide a high quality experience that will enrich the lives of volunteers.
Description
Volunteer Delaware 50+ is a statewide program offered through the Delaware Health & Social Services, Division of State Service Centers, State Office of Volunteerism. Volunteer Delaware 50+ works with more than 200 community organizations throughout the state to offer a variety of volunteer opportunities. Community Partners may include senior centers, hospitals or organizations with a focus on early childhood education, food and nutrition, environment, performing art / culture, animal welfare, homelessness and advocacy.
Volunteer Delaware 50+ also hosts three in-house programs to include, A Matter of Balance, the CareWear Project, and Bags2Mats for the Homeless.
