Volunteers have been making mats for the homeless in our nation for years. In 2019 Volunteer Delaware 50+ added the volunteer opportunity of crocheting plastic bags into mats for the homeless after being introduced to it by a volunteer in Sussex County. The new opportunity soon grew into an official program and in 2022 the program expanded into Kent and New Castle County.
Within this short time, Bags2Mats for the Homeless volunteers have collected plastics, prepared plarn (plastic yarn) and crocheted more than 554 mats statewide (2023). Each bags saving 500-600 plastics bags from going to the landfill.
Collect Plastics Volunteer - assist program in brining awareness to and collecting plastic material such as plastic bags, newspaper sleeves, dry cleaning bags, and other soft plastics needed to make the mats
PLARN Volunteer - cut collected plastic material and assemble loops to create plarn for volunteers
Crochet Volunteer - crochet plastic material into mats for the homeless.
In New Castle County, Bags2Mats Volunteers meet twice a monthly at the Newark Senior Center, to receive plastic material, prepare plarn and turn in completed mats. Bags2Mats workshops are held on the second and fourth Wednesday of every month from 10am-12pm at the Newark Senior Center (200 Whitechapel Dr, Newark, DE 19713).

The mission of Volunteer Delaware 50+ is to engage persons 50 and older in volunteer service, to meet critical community needs, and provide a high quality experience that will enrich the lives of volunteers.
Description
Volunteer Delaware 50+ is a statewide program offered through the Delaware Health & Social Services, Division of State Service Centers, State Office of Volunteerism. Volunteer Delaware 50+ works with more than 200 community organizations throughout the state to offer a variety of volunteer opportunities. Community Partners may include senior centers, hospitals or organizations with a focus on early childhood education, food and nutrition, environment, performing art / culture, animal welfare, homelessness and advocacy.
Volunteer Delaware 50+ also hosts three in-house programs to include, A Matter of Balance, the CareWear Project, and Bags2Mats for the Homeless.
