The Polk County Historical and Genealogical Library is in need of a Digital Preservation Assistant volunteer. The Digital Preservation Assistant volunteer will report to the Research and Genealogy Historian to help preserve the library's collection. Tasks will include capturing digital images of photos, negatives, and/or documents in the collection. Afterwards the volunteer will help in the organization of the materials and uploading the collection to databases such as Past Perfect and ContentDM. Occasionally the volunteer will need to utilize customer service skills when the assignment requires the volunteer to interact with visitors.
The Polk County Historical & Genealogical Library is one of the largest facilities of its kind, holding over 40,000 items in the collection. The collection of books, microfilm, and periodicals contain information about the history and genealogy of the eastern United States. Visitors to the library have free access to the library edition of Ancestry.com and is Polk County’s first FamilySearch Affiliated Library. The Polk County History Center is a vibrant resource for the community that preserves the rich and cultural heritage of the county, as well as enriches the reflective search for identity of many genealogy researchers.
What was once the Polk County Courthouse now serves as the History Center and houses the historical museum and library. The museum serves Polk's community through educational programs, special events, and volunteer opportunities. The museum's exhibits and programs continue to grow and change and there is always something new to discover. The museum collection includes natural and cultural objects related to Polk and the greater Central Florida area that represent our history from pre-Columbian to present day eras. The artifacts on display at the museum represent individuals, cultural groups, and events significant to the region.
