The Financial Coaching Volunteer will support the IRC by working one on one with refugees, asylees, sponsors of unaccompanied children, and other immigrants to learn the basics of building a budget, opening a bank account, building credit, and other aspects of financial literacy.

The Volunteer Financial Coach will work with the program participants to help them identify financial goals, such as saving for their child's college fund or saving money to move into a better apartment. Once the goals have been identified, the Volunteer Financial Coach will work with the participant to plan and implement strategies to make these new goals a reality.

Location: Sessions will be conducted virtually via Zoom. If the coach and client agree, sessions may be conducted at a public library.

Time Commitment: One hour per week, for a total of 8-10 weeks (per client).

Responsibilities:

• Meet 1:1 with financial coaching clients to discuss the financial system of the US, building good habits with money, and increasing net income, net worth, and credit score.
• Record session notes and communicate with the supervisor to identify appropriate IRC and community resources to assist with the participant’s goals.
• Sustain active listening, build trust with clients, and practice a trauma-informed approach to economic empowerment.

Requirements:

• Fluency in Spanish, Arabic, Farsi, or Dari is required.
• Expertise in personal finance or experience in financial services is strongly preferred.
• Once assigned to a client, one MUST commit to the entire 10-week session.
• Must be flexible, creative, non-judgmental, open-minded, and patient in interactions with program participants
• IRC orientation and a full background check (HireRight) are required. 
• Cultural awareness of and sensitivity to this vulnerable immigrant population and a strong desire to help unaccompanied minors adjust to life in the U.S.  
• Demonstrate ability to communicate and work as a team member in a cross-cultural environment.  
• Strong organizational skills with high attention to detail.  
• Engaged in learning about the broader IRC mission, philosophy, global work, and local efforts.  
• Willing to adhere to IRC intern and workplace policies. 

Training

• Full training and all the materials needed are provided.
• Ongoing support for the duration of coaching sessions is also provided.

• Phone screening with our Volunteer Specialist, Kristie Wong.
• A background check was done via HireRight (a donation of $49 to help cover the cost).
• Attend a program-specific orientation.
