Dreaming of a Chance's animal care volunteers are amazing and talented individuals like you who help look after our over 100 bird residents. We have pigeons, chickens, ducks, and quails at our sanctuary. When you join our team, you will be spending time with the birds helping with the daily care of our residents through a variety of activities such as feeding, cleaning/refilling waterers, cleaning coops, and helping out with miscellaneous projects.

We have you go through a training process with an experienced volunteer to get you confident and comfortable with the volunteer work before having you work more independently when you learn all the tricks of the trade. This volunteer opportunity has you coming on a weekly basis so you get to know the residents and they get to know you. It's a fun time helping rescued residents to live their best lives.

What to expect:

*Feeding the birds

* Replacing waters and scrubbing buckets

* Cleaning coops/aviaries

* Helping with miscellaneous projects as needed (ex. painting, small repairs, helping with health checks, building projects occasionally if interested)

Animal Care volunteering is a fun way to help out and get lots of bird experience. We hope to see you here!

About Dreaming of a Chance Farm Animal Sanctuary

Mission Statement

Dreaming of a Chance’s mission is to rescue abandoned domestic pigeons from around the Hudson Valley and NYC and provide them with a forever home. We also strive to educate the public about proper bird care, the effects of abandonment on the environment, as well as how to spot and help abandoned domestic birds.

Description

We opened at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic knowing that a ton of animals were going to be displaced due to the struggles the world was facing. After receiving so many inquiries to help, abandoned domestic pigeons quickly became our primary focus. Very few places are able to help take in domestic pigeons around NY and in our opinion, they need help the most.

Abandoning a bird puts them at extreme risk of death by predators. If they are lucky enough to survive predation, starvation, dehydration, injuries or disease claim them. Domestic birds have no survival skills and many have been genetically modified to decrease flight capabilities putting them more at risk.

Volunteers help us care for all these once abandoned birds that call our sanctuary home and create a support system that enables us to help more. Volunteers are an integral part in helping us further our mission and are able to help in a variety of ways. Since our start, we have helped over 120 birds. This is thanks to wonderful individuals like you. We would love to have you as part of our team. Let us know if you're interested in volunteering.

  • This position requires you to be 16 years old or older. There is a lot of bending and scooping required with cleaning coops and the ability to lift 50 lbs is best. You will be carrying full 2+ gallon water buckets and big buckets with old bedding.
