Please note: This opportunity is not exclusively virtual. Tutoring can be done in-person from many locations in the greater Milford/Stratford CT areas, and can also be done virtually.

Literacy Volunteers of Southern Connecticut (LVSCT) offers free tutoring, one-on-one and in small classes, for those who want to improve their English speaking, reading, writing, pronunciation and conversational skills. Our caring volunteer tutors work with adult English Language Learners to help empower them to accomplish their goals and thrive in their communities.

As English language learners improve their ability to speak and understand the language, more opportunities may open to them, including: finding work, training for a new job; obtaining professional certifications; participating in children’s education; reducing the fear and discomfort of speaking a new language; and integrating into the community.

About Literacy Volunteers of Southern Connecticut

Location:

16 Dixon Street, Milford, CT 06460, US

Mission Statement

The mission of the Literacy Volunteers of Southern Connecticut is to provide services at no cost to any individual who wishes to learn the English language or enhance the reading, writing, speaking and comprehension skills necessary to lead productive lives in our community.

Description

For three decades, our nonprofit organization has been helping immigrants and refugees in the Greater Milford and Stratford areas learn to speak English. The ability to speak, comprehend, read and write English is necessary, in order for individuals to understand information, written and verbal. Without literacy skills, adults will struggle to take part in the world around them and to reach their full potential as parents, community members, and employees.
Our literacy volunteers are making a huge difference in our student’s lives, and are helping them reach their goals.
Last year our tutors donated nearly 4,000 hours to English Language Learners (ELL). Through weekly tutoring, our ELL have entered into higher education or training, gotten new jobs or improved their careers, received their GED and citizenship, voted for the first time, received a drivers license, and become more involved in their children’s education and community activities.
It takes great courage for many of our ELLs to walk through our doors and ask for help. We match them with a tutor, and they begin to learn the English language, some for the first time.
