Main Goals for Position:

VIP will enhance the visitor experience by staffing the memorial building, guiding tours, roving park grounds, and greeting and assisting at the visitor center information desks, providing them with valuable information about the park’s history and attractions. Additionally, they will participate in and promote park events, such as Abraham Lincoln's Birthday and Night Sky events, to enrich the community’s engagement with the park. Finally, they seek to foster a supportive environment by building relationships fellow volunteers and park team, thereby strengthening collaborative efforts in serving the public.

You'll serve as a frontline representative of the agency, working at the park visitor center (either at the Birthplace unit or Knob Creek unit) and the Memorial Building. You'll also get a chance to greet park visitors from around the country and the world, providing information about the park story. This internship will also include preparing for, and leading, tours and other guided walks. Other opportunities may include working on a special research project, or volunteering for a special event.


Position Duties:

  • Greet park visitors and provide a warm welcome at the visitor center or memorial building.
  • Offer information about the park, including orientation, directions, programs, events, and activities.
  • Guide tours.
  • Inform visitors about the visitor center and exhibit area, and initiate the park film.
  • Provide accurate information on park history and the early years and life of Abraham Lincoln.
  • Stock brochure displays to ensure they are well-maintained and accessible.
  • Answer telephone inquiries from the public regarding park information.
  • Operate office equipment as needed for daily tasks.
  • Record visitor statistics to help monitor park attendance and engagement.
  • Assist in the opening and closing of the building according to established protocols.
  • As needed, provide crowd control, and other related duties as assigned.

  • Seasonal Variations: The climate in Kentucky features four distinct seasons. Summers can be hot and humid, while winters are mild but can bring cold temperatures and occasional snow.
  • Rainfall: The region experiences moderate rainfall, particularly in spring and early summer, which may affect outdoor activities and planning.
  • Weather Preparedness: Volunteers should be prepared for changing weather conditions, with appropriate gear for both hot and cold weather.

Physical Demands:

  • Mobility: Volunteers may need to walk or hike to different locations within the park, which can involve uneven terrain.
  • Manual Labor: Depending on their role, volunteers may encounter physical demands such as lifting materials, setting up materials, or carrying equipment.
  • Endurance: Working outdoors for extended periods can require stamina, especially during warmer months or while participating in community events.
  • Adaptability: Volunteers must be flexible in adapting to both environmental and community dynamics, responding to visitors and weather changes as they carry out their activities.
