Chicago Education Advocacy Cooperative (CHIEAC) is a passionate and dedicated non-profit organization committed to advocating for equity and inclusivity in education for all students and families in Chicago. Through collaborative efforts, community engagement, and advocacy initiatives, CHIEAC works tirelessly to address systemic barriers and promote educational opportunities that honor the diverse needs and experiences of racialized and minoritized students and families.

As a research assistant volunteer at CHIEAC, you have access to our full suite of resources and mentorship program aimed at increasing and strengthening survey research skills among racialized and minoritized populations. We offer a unique opportunity for largely Black and Latina/o students to actively contribute to our mission by leading the development and implementation of a survey focused on serving racialized and minoritized students and families in Chicago that is of interest to them.

All CHIEAC volunteers play a pivotal role in collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data to inform our advocacy efforts and amplify the voices of marginalized communities in education.

Survey Design and Development

  • Collaborate with CHIEAC team members to identify a population and topic of interest related to serving racialized and minoritized students and families in Chicago.
  • Lead the design and development of a comprehensive survey instrument, incorporating input from stakeholders and utilizing best practices in survey methodology.
  • Ensure that the survey questions are culturally responsive, respectful, and inclusive of diverse perspectives and experiences.

Data Collection

  • Coordinate the distribution and administration of the survey to the target population, utilizing various methods such as online platforms, community outreach, and partner organizations.
  • Monitor survey response rates and troubleshoot any issues or challenges encountered during data collection.
  • Ensure adherence to ethical guidelines and data privacy principles in all aspects of survey administration.

Data Analysis

  • Conduct thorough data cleaning, organization, and analysis using appropriate statistical techniques and software.
  • Interpret survey results to identify key themes, trends, and insights relevant to the topic of interest.
  • Prepare clear and concise reports, summaries, and visualizations to communicate findings to CHIEAC stakeholders and the broader community.

Community Engagement

  • Engage with community members, stakeholders, and partner organizations to build trust, promote survey participation, and gather input on educational needs and priorities.
  • Foster meaningful relationships with community leaders and advocates to ensure that survey results are utilized to inform advocacy strategies and policy recommendations.

Qualifications

  • Strong interest in education equity, social justice, and advocacy, particularly as it relates to racialized and minoritized communities.
  • Experience in survey design, data collection, and analysis preferred and NOT required.
  • Proficiency in statistical software (e.g., SPSS, R, Excel) and data visualization tools preferred and not required.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to engage with diverse stakeholders and present complex data in a clear and accessible manner.
  • Commitment to upholding ethical standards and centering the voices and experiences of marginalized communities.

Time Commitment

As this is a volunteer role, our requirements of a commitment of approximately 8-10 hours per month. Flexible scheduling is available, and some tasks may be completed remotely.
