any young individuals who have arrived in the United States as refugees or immigrants have experienced prolonged periods of displacement. Challenges such as limited English proficiency and a lack of social connections often lead to immigrant youth and young adults not finishing their education. These difficulties are made more intense by the personal experiences and traumas they've gone through, which can hinder their ability to integrate into local communities.

To address the unique obstacles faced by refugee youth, MLOV's immigrant youth mentorship program seeks to pair eligible individuals (ages 15-24) with positive adult mentors. These mentors provide personalized guidance and support to help these young individuals navigate their new lives. By connecting refugee youth with caring and supportive mentors from their own community, this program offers crucial assistance and nurturing that ultimately aids in their social integration and pursuit of economic self-sufficiency.

Are you passionate about making a positive impact in the lives of immigrant youth? Do you have language skills that can bridge communication gaps and foster connections? If so, we invite you to join our Immigrant Youth Mentorship Program as a dedicated volunteer!

Responsibilities:

  • Translation Assistance: Provide language support to our program participants, ensuring effective communication between mentors, mentees, and their families.
  • Speaking to Parents: Engage with parents and guardians to discuss program goals, address concerns, and create a supportive network for the immigrant youth.
  • Mentorship: Build meaningful relationships with immigrant youth, offering guidance, support, and encouragement as they navigate their journey in a new culture.
If interested in being a mentor sessions will be held once a week Wednesdays or Thursdays at 7pm for an hour virtually for 12 weeks.

Mission Statement

Many Languages One Voice (MLOV) fosters leadership and facilitates community-led initiatives to increase the meaningful inclusion and civic participation of people in the District of Columbia who do not speak English as their primary language in decisions that impact their lives. We approach this by using uniquely integrated strategies that raise awareness of, educate, consult with, advocate for and organize around the rights of the District’s limited and non-English speakers.

Description

MLOV focuses on:

Community Organizing: Community organizing, which allows historically marginalized communities, such as the immigrant communities we work with, to develop an agenda that reflects their needs and build grassroots power. Ultimately, community organizing can yield lasting social, political and economic change. Our organizing work is currently concentrated on health and education justice;

Advocacy: Our community organizing and outreach informs us of the communities' needs, which we strive to focus on as we hold government accountable to the needs of all DC's residents;

Partnerships: Partnerships are vital to our work, and allow us to reach many new audiences for outreach; and

Outreach and Story-Collecting: MLOV both informs community members of their civil rights and shares their stories with a wider audience.
