Project Specifics:
Join this project at Moab, camp on top of a scenic plateau and repair a steep trail that was impacted by some heavy rain events last year! Located in the heart of the Colorado Plateau, the Bureau of Land Management Moab Field Office encompasses 1.8 million acres of stunningly scenic canyon country. Carved by the Colorado and Green Rivers, Moab’s public lands include a vast variety of arches, natural bridges, mesas, and spires. The Moab Field Office is a mecca for recreation, including off-highway vehicles, mountain biking, climbing, base jumping, hiking, horse-back riding, and river rafting. In addition to supporting millions of visitors and hundreds of recreation related jobs in the local communities, Moab also supports a wide array of land uses such as oil and gas production, mining, and livestock grazing. The Field Office is known for evidence of dinosaurs and features the Mill Canyon Interpretive Track Site and Bone Trail. These canyonlands are home to many types of desert wildlife and the area supports a healthy population of bighorn sheep, and can provide great opportunities for wildlife viewing during the fall.
Volunteers will hike approximately 4 miles each day, on rough, uneven terrain along the Fisher Towers National Recreation Trail. Volunteers will focus on building steps, drainage structures, reconstructing retaining walls, installing signs and closing non-designated "social" trails. Volunteers will drive or carpool to the trailhead. From the trailhead, the project site is 4.5 miles roundtrip. There is a 3 mile drive from Lower Onion Creek Campground to Fisher Towers trailhead.
During this trip, Moab’s average high temperature is 79°, and average low temperature is 55°.
Accommodations: Volunteers will stay at Lower Onion Creek Campground. This campground is located along the banks of the Colorado River offering spectacular views of the red rock canyons, buttes, mesas and spires against the backdrop of the nearby La Sal Mountains.. Lower Onion Creek Campground has group sites with fire grates, picnic tables, vault toilets and shade shelters. The group sites do not have water, dump stations or electric hook-ups. A boat ramp is in the campground and near the group sites. Cell phone reception is very limited in these areas and sometimes non-existent. Volunteers need to bring their own camping gear, sleeping bags or linens, towels, and personal toiletries. Volunteers will have the option to remain at the campgrounds until noon on October 6th.
Trip Cost: $425 per person
Volunteer Experience: While trips do not require prior trail maintenance experience, all of our projects require participants to be in good physical condition and will involve 30-40 hours of physical labor during the week.Find More Information & Register Here: https://americanhiking.org/volunteer-vacation-trip/moab-field-office-ut-volunteer-vacation-2024/
