We're looking for people of all walks of life to be part of our community. You don’t need a background in juvenile justice, nor do you need to be an established writer. We ask that you have a shared vision with our program, and the desire to work with young people.

Writing workshops in Sacramento juvenile hall are in-person every Monday evening, for two hours.

  • Be at least 23 years old
  • Commit to 3-5 hours/week, for a minimum of six months
  • Be fully vaccinated against COVID-19

About The Beat Within

Location:

PO Box 34310, San Francisco, CA 94134, US

Mission Statement

The Beat Within (TBW) provides incarcerated youth with consistent opportunity to share their ideas and life experiences in a safe space that encourages literacy, self-expression, critical thinking skills, and healthy relationships with adults and their community. We value compassion with accountability, and the power of the written word to heal and flourish. Outside of the juvenile justice system, The Beat Within partners with community organizations to bring services to youth both inside and outside of detention. We aim to be a bridge between incarcerated youth and the community that supports them.

Description

The Beat Within (TBW) is a non-profit publication of writing and artwork by and for incarcerated youth and their community members. Based in San Francisco, we host writing workshops in juvenile halls across the nation, with our strongest presence in Bay Area counties. Our publication is composed of writing produced during workshops, and is printed on a bi-weekly basis to distribute to the youth we work with.
