OVERVIEW of A PLACE CALLED HOME & THE SOUTH CENTRAL SPORTS LEAUGE
A Place Called Home (APCH) is a youth development organization offering a spectrum of services through afterschool and summer programs, case management and mental health support. At APCH, we envision a world where your zip code does not determine your future, and where all children have the opportunity to find happiness and success in life. For more than 30 years we've served our community - inspiring, encouraging and supporting the young people in South Los Angeles to achieve social, emotional, and economic success.
Our robust programming includes a community-wide youth sports league called the South Central Sports League (SCSL).
The South Central Sports League (SCSL) provides FREE athletics programming for both APCH youth members and youth from the greater South Central community. Check out the SCSL website here.
The mission of the South Central Sports League is to provide a safe and accessible environment where young athletes of the South Central community develop technical, tactical, physical, and mental components of their game to reach the next stage in their sports journey.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY: SCSL Game-Day Support Volunteer: SOCCER Season
* Volunteer Role: Recurring Volunteer (preferred) OR One-Time Volunteer
* Volunteer Type: Individual Volunteer OR Volunteer Group (3-6)

Please Note: There is also an option to continue to support this league for BASKETBALL season March 29-May 31 (day/time to be announced).
* Volunteer Schedule:
- SHIFT 1: 8:30 AM - 12:00 PM
- SHIFT 2: 10:00 AM - 1:30 PM
* Location: Slauson Recreation Center (5306 South Compton Ave., Los Angeles, CA 90011)
*Please Note: This project is organized/hosted by A Place Called Home, but will take place in a location separate from our campus.*
* Volunteer Role Overview: Volunteers will support the game-day facilitation roles of the South Central Sports League. Responsibilities will include equipment and space setup and breakdown, team/player check-in, scorekeeping, clock running and/or other roles as needed. The APCH SCSL Program team will provide guidance for volunteers.
* Required Skills/Experience:
- All volunteers must complete a volunteer waiver (provided to volunteers upon confirmation for this project) prior to volunteering at APCH
- Age: high school junior or older
- Bilingual English-Spanish preferred, but not required
- Strong communication, problem-solving and customer service
- Experience working with youth and group management is highly preferred and appreciated
- Ability to work within an active, potentially noisy environment, and to foster a welcoming, safe, nurturing atmosphere is required
* Please Note: Role may include moving, bending, walking, medium-light lifting and extended periods of standing. Please let the APCH team know if there is anything we can do to make this project more comfortable for you.

Description
A Place Called Home is a youth development organization offering a spectrum of services through after-school and summer programs, case management, and mental health support.
APCH first swung open its doors in 1993 - a year after the LA Unrest, amidst a crime epidemic that rendered the streets of South Central unsafe for its children of any age. APCH’s mission was simple, but wrought with challenges: to provide gang-affected youth of South Los Angeles with a safe haven away from the life-threatening dangers and temptations of the streets.
Since then, a dynamic, multi-service youth and community center has evolved and grown on the corner of South Central Ave and 29th Street.
At APCH, we envision a world where your zip code does not determine your future; where all children have the opportunity to find happiness and success in life. For more than 30 years, A Place Called Home has been serving South Central youth ages eight to mid-twenties and their families through education and arts programs, mental health counseling, mentorship, job readiness, college scholarships, civic engagement, and more. At our core, we are still a place where young people who face tremendous challenges can experience the safety, joy, and opportunity that should be a part of every childhood.
