ORGANIZATION: National Park Service

Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve is seeking a large pool of volunteers who will each commit to assisting with invasive plant management projects on multiple days per month in late summer, fall, and winter at the Barataria Preserve. Weekday work is standard, but weekend work may be arranged if 3 or more well-trained volunteers can be scheduled.


Due to the work’s requirements, volunteers under the age of 12 are not permitted. Minors under the age of 18 are required to be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian to volunteer.


WHERE/WHEN:

Meeting locations are in the Barataria Preserve at trail head parking lots, and change with project and progress. Start no later than 9am, end no later than 3pm.


QUALIFICATIONS:

Able to learn to distinguish target plants from non-target plants.

Able to work safely and at a reasonable speed with a 20lb pack.

Able to use hatchets and machetes in a safe manner.


What to wear:

Long-sleeved shirts, long pants, closed-toe sturdy boots, brimmed hat. Tools, gloves, and PPE will be provided.


What to bring:

Please bring plenty of water, snacks, sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat. Tools, gloves, and PPE will be provided.
