Do you have a passion for New York? A love of history or an interest in nature? Would you like to share the history and beauty of the Hudson River Valley with visitors from all over the world? Interested in working with a vibrant team of professionals? The Trails & Rails (T&R) program of the National Parks of New York Harbor needs you!
Trails & Rails volunteers provide interpretive narrations on board Amtrak’s Adirondack between New York City and Albany on the weekends. Our season starts around Memorial Day and typically ends in mid-November
On board the train, our program consists of two activities: in the café car, we conduct programs where we call out points of interest along the way, interpreting the history and natural features, and answering questions; and we walk the train to visit with passengers who remain in their seats, particularly those who are not able to come to the cafe car.
Working on board the train to Albany and back consists of a one-day round trip of about 6-7 hours. We are based out of the cafe car with occasional walks through the train, talking to passengers as we travel past the George Washington Bridge, the Palisades, Sing-Sing Prison, Bannerman’s Castle, WestPoint Academy, Bear Mountain, the Roosevelt and Vanderbilt National Historic Sites, and so much more! The Northbound Adirondack train departs New York City at 8:40 am. After a layover of about 1 hour, we catch the southbound Empire Service train home, repeating the program in reverse. The southbound program ends in Croton-Harmon, and we usually arrive in New York City around 3pm
We are front line representatives and the first (sometimes only) contact the passengers have with the National Park Service.
