Adults over the age of 18 who wish to tutor other adults in basic literacy (reading and writing) or work with those for whom English is a second language are welcome. No experience is necessary; we provide the training!

All new volunteers are required to attend a Volunteer Information Session via Zoom (approximately 60 minutes) and six hours of virtual tutor training, divided into three 2-hour sessions. Tutoring sessions are currently held in-person or virtually.

Mission: The Literacy Council provides Frederick County adults with pathways to essential literacy skills. Vision: Literacy lifts lives. Description

We have been serving Frederick County for over 60 years, providing one-to-one or small group tutoring to adult learners in Frederick County. We serve native English speakers who have low reading and writing levels and English language learning adults. We also provide community classes, parent literacy classes, and workplace classes. We currently have 70+ students on our waitlist for a tutor (2024). Check out our website for more information: www.frederickliteracy.org
