Are you...
Looking for teaching experience?
Interested in supporting adult students in the classroom?
Excited about reading, writing, and social studies?
You might be a good candidate for teaching GED content with Community Impact! We are recruiting math instructors for our next session set to begin on October 8th and will run through December 5th. We are looking for teaching assistants to volunteer in-person for all subjects.
Math classes run from 6 - 8:30pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Teaching Assistants will shadow and assist teachers. Teaching assistants who excel will be invited to apply to be instructors. This is a great opportunity to gain teaching experience! Individuals who already have teaching experience and a Bachelor's degree are welcome to apply for a paid part-time teaching position before TAing for Community Impact.
This is a great way to get involved in the community and connect with adult students who are working on getting their GED! We are looking for passionate volunteers to join our team and serve a diverse group of adult students in our local area.
If you are interested, please send an email to Monica Haines at hse@communityimpact.columbia.edu with
- your resume,
- your availability during the summer,
- and a few dates and times you are available for a Zoom meeting.
After that, you should receive a response from the HSE Team at Community Impact at Columbia University. We look forward to working with you!
*All classes are in person, near Columbia University's Morningside campus.*

Mission Statement
Community Impact is an independent nonprofit organization dedicated to serving disadvantaged people in the Morningside Heights, Harlem, and Washington Heights communities. Community Impact strives to advance the public good by fostering meaningful opportunities for students, staff, and faculty of Columbia University in order to provide high-quality programs and instill the importance of life-long service.
Description
From its earliest inception as a single service initiative formed in 1981 by Columbia University undergraduates Joe DeGenova and David Joyce, Community Impact has grown into Columbia University’s largest student service organization and a primary interface between the University and the Morningside Heights and Harlem communities. As Community Impact integrated itself into the neighborhood’s social safety-net, students identified and responded to new community needs, expanding the number of services available to clients and working towards transforming the organization into an integrated service network with a strong education emphasis. We currently provide a multitude of services, including continuing adult education programs to help community members obtain high school equivalance. We offer ESL classes for immigrant families, and a workforce development program to help our community gain meaningful employment.
